Reviewing Sunday school curriculum regularly gives me an opportunity to discover all sorts of cool curriculum like Deep Blue!
Inspired by the verse: “In the depths of who I am I rejoice in God my savior,” (Luke 1:47 CEB) Deep Blue aims to help kids discover how they can be serious disciples of Jesus. Featuring animated videos, exciting Bible stories, science experiments, arts and crafts, and more, this curriculum has a lot to offer the active imaginations of children!
What makes it great
Lessons are formatted perfectly for teachers
Perusing lessons for different ages revealed a lot of elements I really loved. Many of the activities had a real science experiment bent to them that was really fun and engaging. The discussions questions were age appropriate for the kids without being simplistic.
But the thing I love the most was the way the lessons was formatted for teachers. There are times that teachers don’t really have a lot of time to prepare for the lessons and everything was laid out to make this as easy as possible. Using various font sizes, boldness, and icons, these lessons plans made instant sense and were completely intuitive.
Too often thoughtful formatting isn’t prioritized in curriculum lesson plans, but with Deep Blue, I felt like I was looking at a beautifully rendered webpage.
Pairs perfectly with the award-winning Deep Blue Kids Bible
In 2014 Cokesbury won a “Christian Retailing’s Best” award for the Deep Blue Kids Bible. The award which is judged on a Bible’s ability to evoke emotion, open people’s minds to new ways of thinking, and encourage Christ-like living.
Written with 7–12-year-olds in mind, the notes in the Deep Blue Bible include devotionals, Bible trivia, and the characters from the Deep Blue Curriculum—Asia, Edgar, and Kat. All of these elements help kids discover how to approach and discover biblical meaning and depth for themselves.

It’s imperative that churches consider how they can engage today’s tech-savvy kids. With so many empty distractions, it’s awesome to see a company augmenting their curriculum with an app that is fun and reinforces what kids are learning in Sunday school.
